100 Tips that will help keep your '02 happier (and safer):
BRAKES:
- 320i rear drum brakes will bolt onto a '02 for much
improved braking. This is a better idea if the front brakes
have been upgraded also.
- Old rubber brake line often clog internally and act
as one-way pressure valves. They are often the cause of
brake dragging and pulling.
- Braided metal brake lines are more durable, perform
better and have a firmer pedal feel (review the DOT-approved
Kevlar lines).
- Do not resurface a bad brake disc. Replace it.
- Use of non-original rear brake linings may result in
a parking brake which cannot be adjusted, and failure.
- Change brake fluid at least annually.
- A leaking master cylinder can cause the driver's side
frame rail to rust out under the driver's seat.
- If brake fluid is disappearing from the reservoir and
you can't find a leak, check the pedal bucket. A leaking
clutch master cylinder will fill it up with fluid, with
no exterior leaks. And it holds nearly a pint. Also check
the brake booster if none is found in the pedal area. Puffs of
white smoke can sometimes be seen as brake fluid gets
periodically sucked into the running engine.
- 530i master cylinders give better stopping. On an early single circuit car (pre 69) the brake master from a 320i can be used.
- Repco Metal Master brake pads work well.
