100 Tips that will help keep your '02 happier (and safer):
COOLING SYSTEM:
- Most people use way too much antifreeze in their cooling system.
Water transfers heat to metal better than antifreeze so using less
will actually improve cooling. A ratio of 70(H2O)/30(AF) is much better than 50/50.
- A 320i radiator is as good, or better than the 2002
part; Is lighter and the conversion may cost less than
the 2002 radiator alone. Note you will still need the
320i hoses and to fabricate some mounting brackets.
- The early Ford Pinto radiator will work also and installs
easier than the 320 radiator. It also uses the stock
hoses and has a larger coolant capacity.
- If your 2002 runs hot, and the radiator is more than
5 years old, have it rodded out, recored, or fully replaced.
Also check to make sure the thermostat is working properly.
- When draining your cooling system, don't forget to
remove the block drain bolt (under the exhaust manifold)
and set the heater temperature control to ``HOT''.
- Use quality anti-freeze; Use distilled water for batteries
and cooling systems.
